The European Dragon Boat Federation (EDBF) plans to install a new competition, which is, as a series of races, ongoing throughout the year. The format is named the EURO-CUP!
The Euro Cup is open to all clubs and crews, who can win medals and trophies at each Euro Cup race, while points they score go to their EDBF Member Nation. Accounted will be the best four scores from five confirmed events, so far. Further locations may still be added.
In Barcelona, on May 18/19th, 2019 it was given a start with the 1st Euro Cup Race, as part of the Barcelona Dragon Boat Festival, organized by Dragon Boat Emotions. Held on the Olympic Regatta Course, good racing had to be the order of the 2 days of competition. Twenty-two club crews took part in the Euro Cup Races on Saturday 18th May 2019, racing in Standard and Small Boats. Nineteen EDBF Member Countries took part (see Racing Points Table), with international crews coming from Dubai, Macau and the USA. Amongst the paddlers there were 26 different Nationalities, so Barcelona truly was a Festival for all. The weather varied from warm and sunny to wet and windy but the atmosphere was never dull !!
The other upcoming Euro-Cup races in 2019 are:
Seville - 26/28 July (Crews in Finals will score Euro Cup Points)
Nottingham - 21/22nd September.
Belgrade - 28/29th September
Rome - 19/20th October.
This year 2019 runs as a trial launch of the EDBF Euro Cup Race Series. The new Euro Cup is designed to encourage Sport Racers to go to Dragon Boat Festivals and race for points and medals, whilst also scoring Euro Cup Points for their Country. - This will bring additional excitement by monitoring the countries’ rankings. The Euro Cup format is not restricted to the Standard Boat but racing the Standard Boat gains the most points.
The points calculations:
Always the first 4 Places are counting. Race Classes for the Standard, as well as for the Small Boat are Premier Open and Premier Mixed, while with the Small Boat there are also the Women and the Senior Mixed.
Place-Points:
Premier Standard Boat Races:
Place 1 = 100 points
Place 2 = 90 points
Place 3 = 80 points
Place 4 = 70 points
Premier Small Boat Races:
Place 1 = 50 points
Place 2 = 45 points
Place 3 = 40 points
Place 4 = 35 points
Formular for Bonus-Points:
Standard Boats: Number of Crews + Number of Nations
Small Boats: Half the Number of Crews + Number of Nations
Total Points = Place-Points + Bonus-Points
Of each country the highest scoring crew accounts for points going to their respective Nation.
In Barcelona this came down to the following Euro-Cup-Results:
- Note: 6 Nations represented as France & Switzerland combined, so therefore Place Points split 50/50
